No. 4 Softball Defeats No. 20 Ohio State, 2-1
Feb. 28, 2003
FULLERTON, Calif. - The fourth-ranked Washington softball team (14-0-1) utilized back-to-back doubles in the seventh inning by Amy Hanson (Mount Vernon, Wash.) and Dena Tyson (Corona, Calif.) to break a 1-1 tie and defeat No. 20 Ohio State, 2-1, Friday at the Worth Invitational.
The Huskies jumped out to the early 1-0 lead in the second frame on a leadoff solo home run by freshman Sarah Hyatt (Sedro-Woolley, Wash.).
Junior ace Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.) kept the Buckeyes at bay, giving up no hits through four innings. Ohio State made its first hit of the game hurt as Kristine Himes hit a two-out home run over the centerfield fence in the fifth to knot the game at one.
Washington battled back in the top of the seventh inning on consecutive doubles by Hanson and Tyson to put the Huskies back on top for good.
The Buckeyes threatened in the bottom half of the frame, putting the tying run on third base after a leadoff double and a ground out to the right side. The Huskies intentionally walked Himes to put runners on first and third with one out but Bollinger got UW out of the inning, forcing a pop-up to third and striking out an OSU pinch hitter to preserve the Washington victory.
Bollinger (7-0) earned her seventh win of the season, scattering three hits and striking out three.
The Huskies continue tournament action Saturday with a twinbill against Northwestern and Pacific. Game times are 10 a.m. and noon.
