No. 4 Softball Downs Portland State, 3-0
Feb. 28, 2003
FULLERTON, Calif. - The fourth-ranked Washington softball team (13-0-1) defeated Portland State, 3-0, today to open the Worth Invitational. With the win, the Huskies extend their best start in the program's 11-year history.
The Vikings threatened in the top of the third frame, leading off with two straight singles. UW catcher Kristen Rivera (Perris, Calif.) squashed the rally, picking off the runner at second base. Sophomore hurler Ashley Boek (Redding, Calif.) struck out the next two batters to get herself out of the inning.
The Huskies scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on back-to-back home runs by Rivera and Kathy Fiske (Temecula, Calif.). Rivera led off the frame with a towering blast off the palm trees behind left field. Fiske followed with a line drive over the left field fence to put UW on top, 2-0. It was the second back-to-back home run performance by the Huskies in as many games.
Washington added an insurance run in the sixth inning on two hits and a PSU error. Aimee Minor (San Jacinto, Calif.) got the rally started, reaching base on a Viking error. Pinch hitter Courtney Jeffries (Eugene, Ore.) then singled through the left side to put runners on first and second with two outs. Junior Amanda Oleson (Agoura Hills, Calif.) followed with a single into right field, scoring Minor from second base.
Boek notched her sixth victory of the season, scattering three hits and striking out nine. It was the third shutout of her career.
The Huskies return to action this afternoon with a 2 p.m. game against No. 20 Ohio State. The game will feature a rematch of last season's regional match-up in which the Buckeyes upset the Huskies 2-1 to knock the Dawgs out of the NCAA tournament.
