USD'S Collins Three-Hits Huskies In 5-0 Win

LANCASTER, Calif. - Joey Prast hit a grand slam and drove in five runs while pitcher Kyle Collins faced onlythree batters over the minimum in a three-hitter as the University of San Diego baseballteam shut out Washington, 5-0, in the first game of the Clash of the Conferencestournament at Lancaster Municipal Stadium.
Collins, a junior college All-American last year, allowed only three hits, a hit batter and awalk while another Husky reached on an error, but thanks to three double plays, facedonly 30 batters in the game. After giving up a hit in each of the first three innings, Collinsretired 10 Huskies in a row.
He finished the complete-game shutout with three strikeouts and allowed only onerunner to reach as far as second base as Husky sophomore Taylor Johnson doubled in the second.
After going down in order in the first two innings, the Toreros (5-11) strung together arally in the third. Jose Ortega singled to right to start it and the bases were loaded afterGavin Ng and Ben Quinto reached on infield singles. Prast followed with a grand slamover the left-field fence, his third homer of the year, and USD led, 4-0.
In the fifth, Prast drove in Tony Perez with a single to account for all of the Torero runs.
Husky starter Sean White (0-3), who gave up five runs on six hits over six innings, took the loss for Washington (4-6).
Washington continues play in the Clash of the Conferences Saturday with a 2:00 p.m.game vs. Cal State Northridge.
