Cal Travels to Monterey Bay for Spartan Invitational

After soundly beating the rest of the field at the LUNA Bay Area Classic Feb. 18-19, Cal seeks its fifth victory of the year at the Spartan Invitational Tuesday and Wednesday at the Spartan Invitational in Salinas. The San Jose State-hosted event is on the 6,683-yard Corral de Tierra CC course in Salinas.

Cal enters the tournament after posting a 23-stroke win two weeks ago. Sarah Huarte claimed medallist honors with a two-day total of even-par 144, seven shots better than teammate and runner-up Sophia Sheridan. For her effort, Huarte was named the Golf World magazine female collegiate golfer of the week.

Last year, the Bears won the Spartan Invitational by one stroke over Pepperdine. Huarte was the low scorer for the Bears, coming in a tie for 10th by shooting a 5-over-par 221 (72-72-77). Other Cal Scorers were: T25. Anna Temple 226 (71-74-81), T32. Claire Dury 228 (82-75-71), T34. Ria Quiazon 229 (68-87-74), and T37. Vikki Laing 231 (76-79-76).

THE FIELD: California (7),Pepperdine (9), Washington (10), and UCLA (13), followed by UNLV, Arizona State, San Jose State, Oregon State, San Francisco, Long Beach State, Oregon, UC-Irvine, Hawaii, and CS-Monterey Bay.
