Copland Captures Seventh Place Finish

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - The Washington State University Women's swim team finished ninth place after the third and final day of the Pacific-10 Conference Championships, Saturday at the King County Aquatics Center.

No. 12 UCLA won the competition without having won any individual titles. The Bruins finished with 1399 points. Second place went to No. 8 Stanford (1308), followed by No. 9 USC (1138), No. 6 Arizona (1013), No. 7 California (940.5), No. 15 Arizona State (765), No. 23 Washington (578.5), Oregon State (544), and WSU (299). Oregon does not sponsor women's swimming.

Freshman Jane Copland swam a personal best in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:15.71. Her swim earned her a seventh place finish. The New Zealand native remains second on the Cougar All-Time Top 10 list, beating her old time of 2:16.29. Her finish marked the highest for the Cougars on Saturday.

Lindsay Henahan, a senior from Rochester, N.Y., continued her strong performance, with a 12th place finish in the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.15. The co-captain's preliminary time of 51.03 is a career high for her and moves her to second on the top 10. She previously held the third spot with a 51.67 time.

Senior Jill Olson finished 18th in the 1650 freestyle (17:06.50). Senior Becca Cohen finished 25th in the same event with a time of 17:24.00.

California junior, Natalie Coughlin, broke her previous American/NCAA/Pac-10 record in the 100free with a time of 47.42.

Stanford junior, Tara Kirk was just 1/100 of a second off from breaking her own American/NCAA/Pac-10 record in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:07.37.

Those who qualify, including senior Lindsay Henahan, will travel to Auburn, Ala. for the 2003 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, March 20-22. Cougar athletes may also compete at the Canadian National Championships, and at the U.S. National Championships in Indianapolis, Ind., April 1-5.
