OSU Baseball Falls In Final Game At Clash Of The Conferences

LANCASTER, CALIF. - Oregon State dropped its second consecutive game at the Clash of Conferences, falling to San Diego 10-9 in 10 innings. The Toreros (6-11) rallied with four runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game and scored the game-winning run in the top of the 10th.

Oregon State (7-7) led 6-5 lead after seven innings and increased the lead in the eighth. After a bases loaded walk, Tony Calderon hit a two RBI double to give the Beavers a 9-5 advantage in the bottom of the eighth.

After a walk to San Diego's Jose Ortega, pinch hitter Erik Verdugo blasted a home run to bring the Toreros within two in the top of the ninth. After striking out the next batter, OSU relief pitcher Andy Baldwin surrendered a solo home run to Tony Perez. Zach Dobek singled home Joey Prast, who reached base on a double, to knot the game at nine. Jon Koller relieved Baldwin and forced a double play to end the Torero rally.

In the top of the tenth Mike Oseguera led off with a triple for the Toreros. After a fly out, Verdugo connected with a double to score Oseguera, giving San Diego the 10-9 advantage.

Tony Perez shut down the Beavers in the bottom of the tenth, striking out one batter and forcing two ground ball outs.

Calderon finished the game 2-for-6 with four RBI, while teammates Chris Biles and Chris Kunda each had two hits. Beaver first baseman Andy Jarvis went 3-for-4 at the plate and drew two base on balls.

OSU starter Jake Postelwait was replaced by Kenny Anderson after the first inning on the mound. Postelwait walked three, allowed one hit and surrendered two runs, one which was earned.

Anderson pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing one hit and three unearned runs en route to three strikeouts. Koller (0-2) took the loss for the Beavers after pitching 1 2/3 innings.Tony Perez earned the victory for San Diego, pitching two scoreless innings and striking out two.

Oregon State makes its home debut this season Tuesday, when the Beavers face the Portland Pilots at 3 p.m. at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
