March 2, 2003
FULLERTON, Calif. - The No. 17 Oregon State softball team dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 7 Cal State Fullerton in Sunday's final game of the CSUF Worth Tournament.
The Beavers finished tournament action with a 3-2 record and boast a 16-7 mark on the season.
Fullerton (16-7) used a big first inning to take an early lead. Gina Oaks and Jodie Cox led off the frame with back-to-back singles and Jenny Topping followed with a single to center field that drove in two runs and put the Titans ahead, 2-0.
Fullerton added another run in the second inning when Krista O-Hanian lined a shot over the left field fence.
The Titans scored an insurance run in the fifth behind an RBI by Topping.
'We were a little off in the first two innings,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'Dena did a great job in relief.'
'We are definitely a team that can compete with the Top-10 teams in the country,' said Walker. 'We just need to learn to play like a Top-10 team for seven innings.'
Oregon State returns to action on Friday at the National Invitational Softball Tournament hosted by San Jose State University. The Beavers will face Missouri-Kansas City at 2 p.m. followed by a 4 p.m. contest against the host Spartans.
