No. 4 Bears Edge No. 39 Oregon, 4-3

March 2, 2003

Eugene, Ore. - The No. 4 California women's tennis team squeaked by the No. 39 Oregon Ducks, 4-3, this afternoon March 2 at the Student Tennis Center in Eugene. The Bears claimed the doubles point to start things off, but only managed to win three of the six singles matches to hold on for the victory.

On No. 1 doubles, the 11th-ranked pair of Raquel Kops-Jones and Christina Fusano lost their second match in a row, getting upset by No. 38 Courtney Nagle and Daria Panova, 8-4. The loss is the Cal tandem's second defeat to the Oregon pair this year, as Kops-Jones and Fusano lost 8-6 in the Quarterfinals of the Pac-10 Indoor Championships January 18. Courts two and three went the Bears' way as Jody Scheldt and Jieun Jacobs won 8-3 over Monika Gieczys and Ester Bak while Nicole Havlicek and Catherine Lynch defeated Anna Leksinka and Jamie Marshall, 8-3. Both duos posted their 10th victories of the season as Scheldt/Jacobs improved to 10-6 and Havlicek/Lynch 10-3.

With the early 1-0 lead, the Bears took to singles play with the decided advantage. In the marquee matchup on court one, No. 13 Kops-Jones squared off against No. 16 Daria Panova. The match did not live up to expectations, though, as Panova handed Kops-Jones just her second loss in dual match play with a straight set 6-4, 6-1 victory. On court No. 2, Oregon's 52nd-ranked Nagle took care of Cal's Lynch, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, dropping her to 2-4 in dual play.

On the upside for the Bears, senior captain Fusano, ranked No. 45 in the nation, showed her true colors in surviving a three-set thriller with No. 89 Monika Gieczys, 2-6, 7-5, 7-6, to give the Bears a singles victory. No. 56 Jieun Jacobs also persevered on court No. 4, eliminating Jamie Marshall in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, improving to 6-2 on the season. Havlicek provided the third singles victory for Cal on court No. 5, breezing past Julie Merle for the 6-0, 6-1 triumph.

On court No. 6, redshirt freshman Brooke Borisoff, fresh off her Flight 4 singles crown at the Pac-10 Indoors, fell to Anna Leksinka, 6-4, 7-5, to halt her winning streak at four.

Cal returns to action Friday, March 7 when it hosts No. 26 Arizona in a 1:30 p.m. matchup with the Wildcats at Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley.
