UCLA Wins Easton Classic With 2-0 Victory Over Missouri
March 2, 2003
LOS ANGELES - UCLA (22-1) defeated Missouri by a score of 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at UCLA's Easton Stadium in the championship game of the Easton Classic. Keira Goerl pitched her ninth one-hitter of the season and had seven strikeouts for the Bruins in the game.
UCLA scored both of its runs in the fourth inning. Caitlin Benyi led off the inning with an infield single, but was out on a fielders choice hit by Stephanie Ramos. Ramos would advance to third base when Missouri's left fielder mis-played a ball hit to the outfield by Tairia Mims, giving the Bruins runners on second and third with no outs. The pair would come across to score on a wild pitch during the at-bat of Claire Sua. The pitch was in the dirt at Sua's feet, and scooted back to the fence, scoring Ramos. When Missouri's catcher tried to throw and make the play at the plate, the ball wound up loose in the infield, allowing Mims to score.
That was all the offense Goerl would need, as she struck out seven batters, including four of the last five, on her way to her ninth one-hitter of the season and third of the weekend. Goerl is now 15-1 on the season with a 0.21 ERA, and is holding opposing batters to a .090 batting average on the season.
UCLA returns to action on Thursday, March 6, when the Bruins open play at the Hedrick's Hallowell Chevrolet Classic in Fresno, CA, with a 5 pm first pitch against BYU. UCLA will play a total of five games during the four-day tournament hosted by Fresno State.
