Women's Golf Opens Spring Season at Spartan Invitational

March 2, 2003

EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon women's golf team will open the spring portion of its 2002-03 season Tuesday and Wednesday at the Spartan Invitational. Teams will play two rounds the first day and one the final day at the 5,938-yard, par-72 Corral De Tierra Country Club in Salinas, Calif.

The Ducks will send a young contingent of three sophomores and three freshman to the first tournament of the spring. Freshman Therese Wenslow was Oregon's No. 1 golfer in the fall with a 75.3 average, while sophomore Johnna Nealy of Grants Pass, Ore., was a close second at 77.5. Sophomores Jess Carlyon and Jaime Seefried and freshmen Michelle Timpani and Erin Andrews fill out the Oregon squad.

The young Ducks will be challenged by No. 7 California, No. 9 Pepperdine, No. 10 Washington and No. 13 UCLA. The remainder of the 14-team field includes Arizona State, UC Irvine, Cal State Monterey Bay, Hawaii, Long Beach State, Nevada-Las Vegas, Oregon, Oregon State, San Francisco and host San Jose State.

'We're sending three golfers who have played this course before and knowledge of the course can really help at Corral De Tierra, said Oregon coach Shannon Rouillard. 'It's a very scoreable course if you know how to play it.'
