ASU Gymnasts Achieve No. 2 Ranking, Play Host To Boise State Friday

This Week --Second-ranked Arizona State returns home Friday, March 7, to host Boise State at 7:30 p.m. in Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe. ASU holds a 9-1 lead in the all-time series with the Broncos. The Sun Devils have faced eight ranked teams in 2003 as they have faced No. 8 Stanford at the Maui Invitational (1/3), No. 17 Washington (1/17), No. 5 Utah (1/24), No. 13 Arizona (1/31), No. 9 Oregon State (2/7), No. 1 UCLA (2/16), No. 8 Stanford (2/21) and No. 25 California (2/28). Rankings are based on rqs through Mar. 3, 2003.

ASU In The Rankings (Sun Devils Move To No. 2) --This week ASU is No. 2 nationally, its highest regular-season ranking in the current poll formula (since 1995). It is ASU's highest regular-season ranking since the early to mid 1980s, when it was consistently ranked in the top five. Arizona State debuted at No. 15 in the GymInfo rankings, based on the preseason coaches poll released January 2. Pac-10 Conference foe UCLA was selected to win the crown with 752 overall votes and 20 first-place bids. ASU received 333 overall votes and was neighbored in the standings by No. 7 Stanford (570), No. 10 Arizona (444) and No. 13 Oregon State (355). The Sun Devils are 6th on bars (49.220 avg.) and 4th on vault (49.285 avg.). Maggie Germaine is 4th nationally in the all-around (39.545 avg.) while Ashley Kelly is T-8th (39.435). Germaine is 3rd on floor (9.945 avg.) while Ashley Kelly is 5th (9.930) on beam and Ashley Ellsberry is 6th (9.930). Kelly is 8th on bars (9.9).

Meet Highlights From 2003 --ASU-California/Rutgers (2/28/03): ASU posted the third-highest team score in history, a 197.825 and defeated No. 25 California and Rutgers. It was the second-best team score this year. ASU posted its best vault score (49.475) and floor score (49.675, school record) of the year. Ashley Kelly won the all-around with a career-high score of 39.750. Kelly set or tied career-highs in all four events. Ashley Ellsberry won the floor (9.975, career-high) and tied Germaine and Kelly for 1st on beam (9.95, career-high).ASU-Stanford (2/21/03): ASU posted the 9th-best score in school history with a 196.900. Maggie Germaine placed second in the all-around at 39.550 and tied for first on floor (9.950). Ashley Kelly tied for first on beam (9.950).ASU-UCLA (2/16/03): ASU set a school record score, yet lost to No. 1 UCLA, 198.400-198.150. Maggie Germaine won the AA, posting a career-best/school record 39.775. Ashley Kelly's 39.625 (ch) tied for 2nd. ASU's beam score of 49.875 was a school record and national season-high. Germaine and Ashley Ellsberry had career-high 10.0's on beam. On floor, Germaine and Cassidy Vreeke tied career-highs with 9.95, sharing 1st.ASU-Oregon State (2/16/03): Maggie Germaine won the all-around, posting a 39.400.Germaine tied for 1st on floor (9.925) and placed 2nd on beam (9.850). Cassidy Vreeke tied for 1st on vault (9.875). Ashley Ellsberry tied for 2nd on bars (9.875).ASU-UA (1/31/03): Arizona State recorded its 7th-highest score in school history, defeating No. 13 Arizona, 196.950-196.175 in Tucson. The Sun Devils set a school record on bars with a 49.475. Junior Maggie Germaine tied her own school record (and career-high) in the all-around with a 39.625.ASU-Utah (1/24/03): Arizona State gave 23rd-year head coach John Spini his first road victory over the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, defeating the Utes 197.450-197.150 in front of 9,032 fans at the Huntsman Center. The loss marked the second home loss for Utah this year, which is only the second time that has happened in their 28-year history. It was ASU's first victory over Utah in Salt Lake City since 1976. ASU postedits third-highest team score ever en route to its fourth win of 2003.ASU-Washington (1/17/03): The Sun Devils opened the 2003 home season at Wells Fargo Arena versus Pac-10 foe No. 17 Washington and took first-place with a score of 197.300, the third-highest team score in school history at the time. Washington posted a 194.150. Sun Devil junior Maggie Germaine scored a school record and career-high all-around total of 39.625, placing first. She also scored a career-high 9.90 on beam, tied a career-high on floor (9.95) and set a season-high on vault (9.9). Ashley Ellsberry tied a career-high with a 9.925 on floor and set career highs on vault (9.8) and bars (9.875). Kari Muth set a career-high on beam (9.9) and tied a career best on bars (9.9). Ashley Kelly, only in her second ASU meet, posted career highs in all four events: vault (9.875), bars (9.9), beam (9.95) and floor (9.825).ASU-Maui Invitational (1/3/03): ASU defeated New Hampshire and San Jose State, but lost to Stanford (196.050-194.200). Freshman Ashley Kelly had a strong college debut, placing third in the all-around with a 38.975. It was the best all-around score at ASU since Elizabeth Reid's 39.300 at the NCAA Super Six (4/23/99), representing a span of 45 months or 37 actual meets.

ASU's John Spini Collects Home Win No. 150, And No. 151 --ASU head coach John Spini, in his 23rd year, now has 151 career victories at home, with the UNO's Classic wins over No. 25 California and Rutgers.

Sun Devils Hot In All-Around --ASU has posted 13 of the Top 20 (and 7 of the top 10) all-Around scores in school history this season through eight meets. Maggie Germaine owns six of the scores, including the school record 39.775 (vs. UCLA 2/16/03).
