BEAR NOTES: The California baseball team (11-5), which did not travel to Oklahoma State last weekend due to snow in Stillwater, visits Sunken Diamond this weekend for a three-game non-conference series versus No. 7 ranked and Bay Area rival Stanford. Cal has not played since winning one-of-three games (L 1-0, W 6-3, L 6-1) Feb. 21-23 at No. 8 Long Beach State and winning, 7-5, Feb. 25 at Santa Clara. In the Bears' series at Long Beach State, Cal's starting pitching of junior right-handers Matt Brown, and Brian Montalbo, and sophomore right-hander Kyle Crist, was impressive. The trio combined to throw 21.3 innings with 10 hits, three earned runs, five walks and 11 strikeouts for a 1.27 ERA. Brown pitched 7.0 innings with three hits and no earned runs, Montalbo threw a career-high 8.3 innings with one walk and five strikeouts, and Crist pitched a career-high 6.0 innings with two hits and no runs. On Feb. 25 at Santa Clara, sophomore right-hander Joe Todoroff did not start, but threw a career-high 6.3 innings in relief with five hits, one run, one walk and a career-high eight strikeouts. At the plate, the Bears feature juniors Conor Jackson, Brian Horwitz and Chris Grossman. Preseason All-American Jackson is leading Cal with a .423 average and hit a home run Feb. 14 against Texas-Pan American in his first at-bat after spraining his right ankle Jan. 31 versus UNLV. Horwitz is batting .358 with a team-leading five home runs and 23 RBI, and has two game-winning RBI. Grossman is hitting .340 and had the game-winning home run Feb. 7 versus Loyola Marymount. The Bears return 13 players who were members of Cal's 2001 NCAA Regional Squad.

SERIES RECORD: Cal has a 207-217 all-time series record against the Stanford Cardinal. In the last meeting between the two schools, the Bears were swept (8-4, 13-6, 8-5), May 3-5, 2002 at Sunken Diamond. Cal won one-of-three games (L 15-4, W 2-1, L 4-2) Mar. 8-10, 2002 at Evans Diamond.

HEAD COACH DAVID ESQUER: The 2001 Pac-10 Coach of the Year, Esquer, 37, is in his fourth season at Cal and has a career record of 99-85 (.538). He became only the 10th coach in the history of Cal baseball, which began in 1892, when he was hired June 10, 1999. Esquer replaced longtime Bear mentor Bob Milano, who retired May 17, 1999 after 22 years as the Bears head coach and 29 years involved in the Cal baseball program. Esquer came to Berkeley after serving as the top assistant at Pepperdine from 1996-99. Rrior to working at Pepperdine, he was the No. 2 assistant coach at Stanford under Mark Marquess from 1991-96. A shortstop at Stanford from 1984-87, Esquer was a starter on Stanford's 1987 College World Series championship team, earning All-Tournament honors after hitting .350 with six RBI in Omaha. He also earned All-Pac-10 Southern Division honors as a senior and went on to play professional baseball for four seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, California Angels and Milwaukee Brewers organizations.

STANFORD: The No. 7 Stanford Cardinal (Baseball America), coached by Mark Marquess (27th year as head coach, 1,104-540-5, .671), are currently 11-7, last winning two-of-three versus USC (L 13-4, W 10-6, W 18-4) Feb. 28-Mar. 2 at Sunken Diamond. *Cal won the inaugural College World Series title in 1947, defeating former President George Bush's Yale team, 8-7, in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

*The Golden Bears have had two players go on to be league MVPs in professional baseball - Jackie Jensen was the American League MVP in 1958 with the Red Sox and Jeff Kent was the National League MVP in 2001 with the Giants.
