Former Cal Star Wins U. S. Shot Put Title

March 3, 2003

Former Golden Bear star Kristin Heaston won the women's shot put Sunday at the U.S. Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Heaston won with a throw of 59-2, beating Seilala Sua by eight inches.

The two top finishers in each event qualified for the World Championships on March 14-16 in Birmingham, England, as long as they have achieved the IAAF's 'A' qualifying standard.

'All of my hard work and training this season paid off today,' Heaston said. 'This was just a building block for the future. Some things I plan to work on to qualify for the 'A' standard are explosiveness, quickness and physical fitness.'
