Smart Captures Third Place, Team Stands in Second Place After Three

BOISE, Idaho - Rocky Smart (Sr., Pleasant Grove, Utah), seeded third in the 157-pound weight class for the 2003 Pac-10 Wrestling Championships in Boise, Idaho, the weekend and walked away from the event in third place and a berth into the 2003 NCAA Championships in Kansas City, Mo., March 20-22. Smart went 2-0 on the day to secure his placement at the conference meet and help the Sun Devils remain in the Top 2 of the team race.
In his first match of the consolation bracket, Smart met up with No. 1 seed Matt Gentry of Stanford for a shot at the third-place match. Smart and Gentry opened with a scoreless first period with Gentry starting the second on bottom. Smart built riding time and took a 2-0 lead on back points. Gentry quickly reversed the hold and tied it at two. Smart escaped to lead 3-2 after two. The furious battle raged on in the third with Smart escaping and then hitting a takedown. With riding time, Smart made the final, 7-3.
The battle for third place, the fans were on top of Smart as he fought off a tough challenge from Boise State's Ben Cherrington for a 9-6 decision and a definite spot in the national event. Smart carried a 2-1 lead into the second after a takedown in the first. In the second period, Smart earned a reversal at the end of the second period for a 4-1 lead before a flurry of scoring took place in the final stanza. Smart had two takedowns and an escape while Cherrington scored on a reversal, a stalling call on Smart and two escapes for a final of 9-6.
After the third session of the day, the Sun Devils trail the Broncos, 123-120, heading into the finals. ASU has seven finalists to BSU's six to determine the team champion and five of the 10 finals matches Monday evening will feature a Sun Devil-Bronco match-up.
The tournament concludes with the championship finals at 6:30 p.m. Monday evening.
