Pac-10 Baseball Player/Pitcher Of The Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - STANFORD sophomore designated hitter Danny Putnam has been named Pac-10 Baseball Player of the Week and UCLA senior left-hander Mike Kunes has been named Pac-10 Baseball Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 25-Mar. 3, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Putnam, from Escondido, Calif., had his first two-home run game, driving in a career-high seven runs and was 3-for-4 in Stanford's 18-4 victory over USC on Sun., March 2. He finished the three-game series with a .455 batting average (5-for-11), two doubles, two home runs, nine RBI and an incredible 1.182 slugging percentage as the Cardinal took two-of-three against USC in non-conference action. For the season, Putnam paces Stanford with a .397 batting average and is tied for the team lead with four homers.
Kunes, from Chatsworth, Calif., recorded his third win of 2003 with a seven-inning performance against defending national champion Texas, on Fri., Feb. 28. He allowed only two runs on six hits and struck out five Longhorns in the first day of the Kia Baseball Bash in Fullerton, Calif. In 29.0 innings pitched this season, Kunes has a 4.97 ERA and has amassed 19 strikeouts.
The Player of the Week honor is the first for Putnam in his career and the 51st selection all-time for Stanford. The Pitcher of the Week is the second such honor for Kunes, the 33rd Bruin to earn the weekly recognition.
