Cal Volleyball Announces 2003 Spring Schedule

BERKELEY, CA - The California women's volleyball team began its official spring practice season last Monday and have several competitions scheduled. On Wednesday, Mar. 12, the Bears will play the Alumnae in an exhibition match at 7:30 p.m. in Haas Pavilion. On Saturday, Mar. 15, Cal will compete in a women's/men's volleyball doubleheader against Fresno State. The Bear women will play against the Bulldogs at 3 p.m., followed by a men's match at 6 p.m. The two contests will be free of charge and open to the public. Then on Wednesday, March 19, the Cal women will host Saint Mary's at 7:30 p.m. at Haas Pavilion.
After spring break, the Bear women travel to two tournaments. On April 5 at Sacramento State, Cal will play in at least four matches during a multiple team tournament. The following weekend, Apr. 12-13, the Bears will travel back to UC Santa Barbara (where Cal played in the 2002 NCAA Tournament) and compete in at least five matches against teams from all around the country.
During the 2002 season, the Bears made their first NCAA appearance since 1989, defeating six opponents ranked in the AVCA Top 25 on the way to a 20-12 record, its best mark since going 22-20 in 1983. Cal, led by third team All-American Mia Jerkov, tied school record by starting the 2002 season with nine consecutive match victories, and set a school record by winning 27 consecutive games to start the season. In the Bears' 9-0 start, Cal won the Golden Bear Invitational, the UNLV Gameworks Classic and the SMU DoubleTree Invitational, with Jerkov earning MVP honors in all three tournaments.
