Keira Goerl Strikes Out 13, Pitches 10th One-Hitter of the Year.
March 6, 2003
FRESNO, CA - UCLA (23-1) opened play at the Hedrick's Hallowell Chevrolet Classic with a 6-0 win over BYU (9-6) on Thursday night, as Keira Goerl pitched her 10th one-hit shutout of the season. Natasha Watley provided the bulk of UCLA's offense with a three-run triple in the second inning.
The Bruins manufactured their first run in the bottom of the first inning, when senior shortstop Natasha Watley had a lead-off single, stole second base, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Caitlin Benyi, and scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Tairia Mims.
A two-out rally in the bottom of the second inning gave UCLA three additional runs, as Toria Auelua, Monique Mejia and Andrea Duran hit consecutive singles to load the bases for Watley, who hit a bases-clearing triple down the right field line, giving UCLA a 4-0 lead. Two more Bruin runs scored in the third inning on a two-run shot to right field by Stephanie Ramos, her third home run of the season.
Meanwhile, junior pitcher Keira Goerl recorded 13 strikeouts, including the third and sixth innings when she struck out the side. She allowed her first hit of the game in the fifth inning when lead-off hitter Oli Keohohou hit an infield chopper and was able to reach first base before a play could be made.
UCLA returns to action at 4 pm on Friday when the Bruins face St. John's in further action at the Hedrick's Hallowell Chevrolet Classic.
