No. 12 Cardinal Win Two In First Day Of Speedline Invitational.

March 6, 2003

Plant City, Fla. - Freshman Catalina Morris ' (Sonoita, AZ) two RBI single in the eighth inning scored the game-winning runs as the 12th-ranked Stanford softball team defeated Western Michigan 8-5 in the second game of the Speedline Invitational. The Cardinal (16-5) also recorded a victory earlier in the day over Coastal Carolina, 7-1, at the ISF Fields in Plant City, Florida.

Stanford scored two runs in the first inning against Western Michingan, the first one coming from Jessica Allister's (Nacogdoches, TX) single that plated Morris. Ching added the Cardinal's second run off Cassi Brangham's (Clovis, CA) ground out to lead 2-0. Western Michigan came back to score three runs in the second, but the Cardinal retook the lead in the third.

Morris led off the inning with a single and stole second. Following a Kira Ching (San Lorenzo, CA) walk and a double steal to put runners at second and third, Allister grounded out to the second baseman to score Morris. Brangham roped a double to left, plating Ching for a 4-3 Stanford advantage.

The Cardinal held the lead when Maureen LeCocq (Woodland Hills, CA) came in for starter Tori Nyberg (Belmont, CA) with the bases loaded. LeCocq then fanned three batters, but not before Crystal Gorny delivered her second RBI single to tie the game at 4-4. The Broncos went up 5-4 on back-to-back doubles by Amy Fleming and Jaymie Voss in the fifth inning.

Ching tied the game at 5-5 with an RBI single up the middle to score Lappin in the top of the sixth. Dana Sorensen (San Diego, CA) took over in the circle for LeCocq and struck out the side.

Neither team could get a run across in the seventh, sending the game into the international tiebreaker. Katherine Hoffman (Kansas City, MO) started on second for Stanford and following a Meghan Sickler (Houston, TX) walk, Lappin laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third. Morris then delivered her single to left field, scoring both Cardinal. She later scored on Allister's base hit for the 8-5 lead.

Sorensen then took over and fanned three Bronco batters to end the game and pick up her sixth win of the season. In 3.1 inning of work Sorensen struck out 10 of 11 batters she faced, allowing only one walk.

Morris led the Cardinal hitters with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate and finished with two RBI. Allister followed with two hits and three RBI, while Brangham had a double and two runs batted in.

Earlier in the afternoon, Stanford got on the board first against Coastal Carolina after a base hit by Lappin and a double by Morris. Ching followed with a base knock to score Morris for the 1-0 Cardinal lead.

Stanford exploded for five runs in the second inning on RBI singles by Brangham and Morris. Ching roped a bases loaded double to score Brangham, Sickler and Morris for a 6-0 advantage.

The Cardinal added one more run in the third on Laura Severson's (Frankfort, IL) single that plated Brangham, who had doubled earlier. Coastal Carolina got its first hit in the fifth inning, but did not threaten until the top of the seventh. Sara Hostetler and Morgan Tolleson had back-to-back one out singles and Lynee Hostings walked to load the bases. Severson fanned Suzanne Kimbrell, but walked Kelli Julg for Coastal Carolina's only run of the game.

Severson picked up her third win of her first collegiate season to stand at 3-1, pitching the final four innings of the game and finishing with three strikeouts. Sorensen got the start, went three innings, fanned seven batters and did not allow a hit.

Ching led the Cardinal with a perfect 2-for-2 performance at the plate with four RBI and a double. Morris and Brangham each added two hits to Stanford's nine hit attack for the game.

The Cardinal will continue play tomorrow in the Speedline Invitational with a 2 p.m. game versus host South Florida and a 6 p.m. contest with Long Island.
