UCLA Women Compete At Last Chance Indoor T & F Meet in Seattle This Weekend

Jeanette Bolden's UCLA women's track & field team this weekend (March 7-8) in Seattle, WA will compete in a last chance indoor meet at the Dempsey Indoor facility at the University of Washington.

It is one of eight 'last chance' meets held this weekend throughout the U. S. as collegiate athletes try to improve or establish qualifying marks for the upcoming 2003 NCAA Indoor T & F Championships, held March 14-15 in Fayetteville, AR and hosted by the University of Arkansas. Last season, the Bruin women placed second at the NCAA Indoor and won the team championship in both 2001 and 2000.

Bruin Women
This week rated No. 8 in the U. S. by Trackwire, the Bruin women will send 14 athletes to Seattle: On the track:

  • junior Sheena Johnson, with indoor marks of 8.25 (NCAA provisional) in the60m hurdles and 7.47 in the 60m.
  • junior Sani Roseby, with an indoor mark of 8.13 in the 55m hurdles.
  • freshman Dawn Harper, with indoor marks of 7.98 in the 55m hurdles, 8.41(NCAA provisional qualifier) in the 60m hurdles and 7.73 in the 60m.
  • sophomore Monique Henderson, with indoor marks of 7.50 in the 60m and 23.49 in the 200. In 2002 as a true freshman at the NCAA Indoor, Henderson ran on UCLA's winning distance medley relay and earned All-American honors on the Bruins' 4 X 400m relay.
  • junior Adia McKinnon, who is a three-time indoor/outdoor All-American and who won the Pac-10 400m crown as a freshman in 2001.
  • senior Tiffany Burgess, in the 800m, with an NCAA automatic qualifying mark 2:05.28. Last year at the NCAA Indoor, Burgess ran on UCLA's winning distance medley relay and won All-American honors on the UCLA 4 X 400m relay.
  • Junior Lena Nilsson, with two NCAA Indoor automatic qualifying marks in the 800m (2:05.15) and 3000m (9:13.55). At the 2002 NCAA Indoor, Nilsson ran on UCLA's winning distance medley relay and placed second in the mile. She's also the NCAA Outdoor defending 1500m champion.
  • sophomore Alejandra Barrientos, with indoor marks of 2:13.7 in the 800m and an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:46.53 in the mile.
  • sophomore Valerie Flores, with indoor marks of 5:05.35 in the mile, 9:56.86 in the 3000m and 17:27.33 in the 5000m.

    In the field:

  • unior Julie Stevenson, in the high jump, with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 5-10.
  • sophomore Candice Baucham, with indoor marks of 19-6.25 in the long jump and an NCAA provisional leap of 42-2.75 in the triple jump.
  • junior Gail Larsen, in the pole vault, with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 12-11.50.
  • sophomore Briona Reynolds, in the shot put, with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 51-7.75.
  • freshman Kamaiya Warren, with indoor marks of 47-11.75 in the shot put and 47-11.25 in the 20lb. weight throw.

    Looking Ahead
    UCLA's next home outdoor meet at Drake Stadium is the two-day (April 4-5) Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational.
