No. 2 Softball Completes First Day of Red Raider Classic

The No. 2 Arizona softball (23-2) team opened the first day of the Red Raider Classic in Lubbock, Texas, with a 9-0 win over New Mexico (6-23) and 12-0, over Columbia (0-2).
The Cats opened the tournament with a game against New Mexico. Arizona went up, 1-0 in the fourth inning with a run by sophomore Courtney Fossatti. Fossatti reached base on a bunt and scored off a sacrifice fly by junior Wendy Allen.
Arizona scored six runs in the fifth inning. Both senior Lovie Jung and sophomore Jackie Coburn hit home runs. Jung's two-run double in the sixth inning scored freshman Autumn Champion and senior Lisha Ribellia and put the Cats up 9-0. Jung ended the game 3-for-3 with one run and three RBI.
Freshman Alicia Hollowell pitched six innings for the Cats and gave up two hits. Hollowell improves to 13-2.
Arizona played Columbia in the second game of the day. Junior Mackenzie Vandergeest hit a grand slam in the first inning and put the Cats up, 4-0. That was the eighth home run of the season for Vandergeest and her third grand slam.
Jung hit her 13th home run of the season in the fourth inning. The Cats scored five runs in the fifth inning, including a two-run home run by sophomore Allyson Von Liechtenstein. It was the first career home run for Von Liechtenstein.
Freshman Leslie Wolfe pitched for Arizona. Wolfe gave up two hits and struck out seven. Wolfe improves to 1-0.
The Cats continue action in the Red Raider Classic tomorrow when they take on Witchita State at noon and Texas Tech at 2 p.m.
