Washington Golfers Host Northwest Shootout

March 7, 2003

Seattle - The 21st-ranked Washington men's golf team will host its first tournament at Washington National Golf Club in Auburn on Saturday, March 8. The Northwest Shootout will also feature Oregon, Oregon State and Western Washington. The 36-hole event will include a morning round that starts at 6:56 a.m. and an afternoon session that gets underway at noon.

'We wanted to have the opportunity to play a competitive tournament at Washington National before we host the NCAA West Regional (May 15-17),' says Husky coach Matt Thurmond. 'We've designed the format so this will be a play five, score four tournament, but each team will be able to enter several additional players as individual competitors and I think that helps everyone's program.'

The Huskies are coming off a 10th-place finish at USC's Cleveland Classic that concluded Tuesday. Washington junior All-American, who leads the Huskies with a 71.2 stroke average, was 19th overall at 3-over 216. Oregon and Oregon State tied for 13th at the tournament.
