Bears Complete Desert Sweep, Defeat No. 50 Arizona, 6-1

Tuscon, Ariz. - The No. 5 California men's tennis team (10-1) completed its first desert sweep since 1998, as the squad defeated No. 50 Arizona this afternoon, 6-1, at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center in Tucson. The Bears claimed two of the three doubles matches and five of the six singles matches in the victory.
Cal claimed the doubles point with victories on courts one and three. On court two, Arizona's pair of junior Whi Kim and sophomore Paul Warkentin defeated Conor Niland and Mik Ledvonova, 8-6, for the Cal tandem's second loss in dual action. Moving to court No. 1, Patrick Briaud and Balazs Veress improved to 10-2 on the season with their 8-2 drubbing of Colin O'Grady and Roger Matalonga, while on court No. 3 the new pairing of Or Dekel and Robert Kowalczyk clinched the point for the Bears, defeating junior Carl Hagman and freshman Daniel Andrus, 8-5.
With the doubles point in hand, the Bears rolled through singles play, only dropping one match. Arizona's Matalonga earned the Cats' lone singles point by defeating Wayne Wong in straight sets, 7-6 (6), 6-2, at the No. 5 slot. California's Conor Niland clinchedthe match by defeating Kim on court one, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, for his fourth consecutive win. Balazs Veress returned to his winning ways with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, victory over Carl Hagman in the No. 2 position. On court three, Dekel claimed his third win a row with a 7-6, 7-6 (0)win over Warkentin. Playing in the No. 4 position, Kowalczyk won his sixth match in a row, with a 6-3, 6-1 decision over O'Grady.
On court No. 6, Ledvonova continued his scintillating winning streak with a straight set 6-1, 6-1 victory over Andrus. The native of Denmark has now won nine consecutive matches and is tied with Niland to lead the team with nine dual match play wins.
The Bears will next be in action Saturday, March 15 when they travel to Indian Wells, Calif. to take on No. 40 SMU. First serve is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
