Bruins Fall To #18 USC, 9-6
March 8, 2003
The 18th-ranked USC Trojans (9-9) evened the series and their record with a 9-6 victory over UCLA (11-12) in front of 963 fans at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
After UCLA had put up five runs in the first inning in Friday's contest, the Trojans would return the favor with back-to-back home runs in the first. Joey Metropoulos hit a two-run homer, his second of the series before Jon Brewster added a solo shot.
In the second, USC would add two more to its tally with another two-run homer, this time off the bat of Travis McAndrews. The top of third would bring two more Trojans across the plate and after two and a half innings, USC led 7-0.
The Bruins got on the board in the third inning, bringing the USC lead down to five runs, when catcher Jeff Abney hit his second home run of the season, a two-run homer that brought in Sean Carpenter.
The Trojan lead would grow to seven after the top of the sixth when a bases loaded single from Metropoulos brought in McAndrews and Anthony Lunetta scored on an error.
Matt Thayer crossed the plate for UCLA in the bottom of the inning, when he hit his second home run of the season over the right field fence.
Brandon Averill would cut the Trojan lead down to three with a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning.
UCLA could not muster a late inning rally, recording only one hit in the final two innings.
Starter Casey Janssen was credited with the loss. He lasted 2.1 innings and allowed seven runs, five earned, on seven hits.
Carpenter and Thayer each recorded two hits for UCLA as Averill led the team with three RBI.
The series will conclude Saturday at 1:00 at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The game will be internet broadcast at www.uclabruins.com.
