Huskies Defeat USC, 64-63, In Pac-10 Tournament Action

SAN JOSE, Calif.- Giuliana Mendiola had 29 points and 11 rebounds asNo. 25 Washington defeated Southern California 64-63 Saturday in the firstround of the Pac-10 tournament.
USC had a final chance with 19 seconds left but ran the clock down beforeturning the ball over without getting off a shot. The Women of Troy then had tofoul and Washington's Loree Payne converted both shots.
The Huskies (22-6), seeded second behind No. 9 Stanford, have won threestraight games since giving up 100 points in a loss at Oregon State on Feb. 20.
Mendiola was named conference player of the year this week, an honor coachJune Daugherty campaigned for her junior point guard to receive. Mendiolaaveraged 17.3 points and 6.5 rebounds. She led the conference in assists with5.4 per game. She was greeted after the game in the stands by her many brothersand sisters who made the trip from the Los Angeles area.
Gioconda Mendiola also plays for the Huskies.
Giuliana shot 10-for-15, including 3-of-5 on 3-pointers as the Huskiesovercame 37-percent shooting.
Ebony Hoffman had 19 points and nine rebounds and Rachel Woodward added 13for the Women of Troy, who defeated Washington State in a play-in game Fridaynight to advance. They played for the second time in 17 hours.
Washington outscored USC 8-2 to start the second half, including 3-pointersby Mendiola and Andrea Lalum, to build its biggest lead of the game at 41-29.But USC responded with a 13-0 run, six points by Aisha Hollans and five byWoodward, to go ahead 42-41 with 11:34 left.
The Women of Troy built their lead to 47-43, but Mendiola and Payne kept theHuskies in the game. Payne scored six straight points and Mendiola's 3 at 4:53put Washington ahead 54-52. Lalum had 12 points and Payne 11.
Washington wore white wristbands with number '20' written on them in blackfor teammate Kayla Burt, whose heart stopped on New Year's Eve but was keptalive by five teammates. Burt has been on the bench with the team ever sincethe near-death episode.
