Husky Golfers Win Northwest Shootout

March 8, 2003

Auburn, WA - The 21st-ranked Washington men's golf team shot 18-over 594 to win its Northwest Shootout by 12 strokes at Washington National Golf Club. Oregon was second at 606 followed by Oregon State (613) and Western Washington (618).

Husky senior Derek Berg (Duvall) took medalist honors with a 36-hole total of 141. Berg shot 1-over 73 during the morning and then posted a 4-under 68 during the afternoon round. He was one of only two golfers in the field to shoot an under-par round during a steady rain that fell throughout the day. Oregon's Kyle Johnson, playing as a non-scoring player, carded a 2-under 70 during the morning to take the tournament's early lead.

After the first 18 holes of play, just one stroke separated the top three teams. Washington and Oregon were tied at 299 and Oregon State was at 300.

'To shoot 68 in these conditions today was pretty amazing,' said Husky coach Matt Thurmond on Berg's round. 'The course played really long today and it was difficult to make shots with it being this cold and wet.'

Berg's championship was a first in his Husky career. His previous best showing was a sixth-place finish at the Topy Cup in Japan as a freshman. His second-round score marked the sixth time he has shot 68 as a Husky.

Husky junior All-American Brock Mackenzie was third at 5-over 149. Washington's other scores included a 7-over 151 by Conner Robbins to finish fifth, a 154 by Dan Potter to place 10th and a 156 by Corey Prugh for 21st place.

Dustin Frontis, John Robertson and Rick Doerr all competed for the Huskies as non-scoring players. Frontis posted a 160, Robertson a 162 and Doerr a 165.

The tournament was the first men's collegiate event hosted by Washington National. The Huskies will return to the course May 15-17 when they host the NCAA West Regional.
