No. 17 Softball Splits A Pair At National Invitational Tournament
March 8, 2003
SUNNYVALE, Calif. - The 17th-ranked Oregon State softball team split a pair of games on the second day of the National Invitational Softball Tournament on Saturday. OSU lost 3-2 to No. 10 Arizona State in eight innings but came back for a 4-1 win over Georgia Tech to improve to 18-9 for the season.
The Beavers and Sun Devils were held scoreless until the fifth inning, when each team picked up a pair of runs. OSU scored on solo home runs from Lisa Allen and Steph Adams, while ASU capitalized on a four-hit inning. Keri Pulcifer and Ashley Werschky started the frame off with back-to-back singles, and Billie Akauola and Katie Cobos pinch ran for the duo. A sacrifice moved them to second and third, and Jennifer Forner then singled to center field to drive the two runners home.
OSU had runners in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh innings, but the Beavers stranded a runner on second both times to send OSU into extra innings for the first time this season.
The Beavers started the eighth inning with Clare Burnun on second under the international tie-breaker rule. Brynnen Guthrie led off with a single to center field and went to second while Burnum attempted to score, but she was thrown out at home for the first out. Kelly Petersen walked to put runners on first and second, but a pop-up and a strikeout ended the inning.
ASU used singles from Phelan Wright and Andriana Garcia to load the bases in the bottom of the eighth. Carla Stregs then grounded to pitcher Amy Klever, whose throw home ended up in the dirt to allow Kara Brun to score the winning run.
'It was a hard-fought game. Both teams were evenly matched, and I think it's a good indication we're ready to play Pac-10 ball,' said coach Kirk Walker. 'We just had some opportunities late in the game offensively that we didn't take advantage of.'
Klever dropped to 4-2 with the loss. She started the game and threw four innings before Monica Hoffman came in on relief with a runner on in the fifth. Klever came back in for Hoffman to start the eighth and finished with nine hits and two runs with three strikeouts, while Hoffman allowed four hits, a run and had two strikeouts. Desiree Serrano improved to 12-4 for the Sun Devils after throwing the complete game. She allowed seven hits, struck out nine and walkedjust two.
OSU bounced back to beat Georgia Tech in the second game, much in part to four doubles by the Beaver offense, including three in the third inning. With the Beavers already up 2-0, Shelly Prochaska walked to lead off the inning. Adams then doubled to drive in Prochaska, although Adams tried to stretch her hit into a triple and was thrown out at third. Allen followed with another double, went to third on a sacrifice and scored on Cara Maxey's double later in the inning.
Burnum had OSU's other double, which came on the first at-bat of the game, and she eventually scored the first run of the game on Petersen's RBI single later in the first.
The Yellow Jackets scored their only run of the game on Tasha Waugh's solo home run in the fifth inning.
'It was nice to see us come back and get a win in that second game. Sometimes it's very hardto come back after a loss,' Walker said. 'Overall, we did a good job, but I definitely would have liked to see us put some more runs across.'
Dena DuBois picked up her second win of the year after allowing four hits in just over four innings of work. Monica Hoffman earned her first save of the season, coming in for DuBois with one out in the fifth. Hoffman gave up just one hit in two and two-thirds innings.
Erin Voeltz took the loss for Georgia Tech. She lasted three innings and gave up six hits, three walks and four runs. Tiffany Goodman took over in the fourth and held the Beavers hitless the remainder of the game.
The Beavers resume play Sunday against Minnesota at 10 a.m.
