UCLA Wins Series Against No. 18 Trojans With 17-5 Victory

LOS ANGELES - UCLA scored 10 runs in the first inning Sunday and the Bruins registered a 17-5 non-conference win against the No. 18 USC Trojans at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The Bruins won a series against the Trojans for the first time since the 2000 season.
Matt Thayer went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI while Preston Griffin went 3-for-5 with three RBI as UCLA improved to 12-12 overall while USC fell to 9-10.
Wes Whisler (2-4) went six innings, allowing one run on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts. He faced the minimum through the first three innings. Fraser Dizard (2-2) took the loss for the Trojans with another difficult outing, lasting only one-third of an inning and allowing five runs. Dizard walked five of the six batters he faced.
USC catcher Matt Bonovich went 2-for-4 for the Trojans with four RBI, including his first homer of the season with a three-run shot to left in the seventh inning.
The Trojans travel to Pepperdine for a non-conference game on Tuesday (March 11) at 2 p.m. USC will then host Cal State Fullerton in a series, beginning on Friday (March 14) at 6 p.m. Saturday's game will be played at Edison International Field, home of the world champion Anaheim Angels, at 4 p.m. with the series concluding at Dedeaux Field on Sunday (March 16) at 1 p.m. All four games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
