March 11, 2003
TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State senior shortstop Kara Brun has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Softball Player of the Week for March 3-March 9, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Tuesday. It is the second weekly award for Brun and the 37th all-time honor for the Sun Devils.
Brun was a vital piece in helping ASU to a third place finish at the National Invitational Softball Tournament. Brun, who hit safely in all six games, led the team in every offensive category, batting .591 (13-for-22) with three home runs, three doubles, seven runs scored and seven RBIs. She had a 1.136 slugging percentage and a .485 on-base percentage. Brun also did not strikeout in 22 at bats and did not commit an error in 20 chances. For her efforts she was named to the All-NIST Tournament Team.
In the first game against Virginia Tech, Brun went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs, becoming Arizona State all-time leader in that category (160). In ASU's second game against Santa Clara, Brun hit an RBI double in the later innings to push the Devils to a 2-1 victory.
In the first bracket game against No. 17 Oregon State, Brun went 3-for-4 with another double, and scored the game winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning as she slid under the tag at home plate for the 3-2 win. In ASU's other game against Santa Clara, Brun again proved to be the game-winner as she hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning for the 1-0 win. In the final game of the tournament, Brun provided a lot of the offense as she spurred ASU to a come-from-behind win over Sacramento State. Brun went 3-for-4 with another home run, three runs scored and two more RBIs.
Brun, who is ASU's all-time leader in doubles (46), home runs (32) and RBIs (160), overall leads this year's 22-7 and 12th-ranked team in batting average (.448), runs (31), hits (43), doubles (9), home runs (8) and is second in RBIs (28). She is also on a 10 game hitting streak.
