PAC-10 PLAYER/PITCHER OF THE WEEK

UCLA'S BRANDON AVERILL NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEKARIZONA'S SEAN RIERSON NAMED PITCHER OF THE WEEK

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA junior third baseman Brandon Averill has been named Pac-10 Baseball Player of the Week and ARIZONA junior right-hander Sean Rierson has been named Pac-10 Baseball Pitcher of the Week for March 4-10, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Averill, from Orange, Calif., hit .417 (5-for-12) over the weekend and led the team with seven RBI in UCLA's 2-1 series win over No. 18 USC. Averill finished the series with a team-high two doubles and 10 total bases. He also added a three-run home run, his second of the season, and scored three runs. In a 17-5 win on March 9, Averill had a two RBI double that opened the floodgates for a ten-run inning. The Bruins took the series against the Trojans for the first time since the 2000 season.

Rierson, from Phoenix, Ariz., tossed his fourth career complete game on March 7 to help Arizona defeat defending national champion Texas, 5-1, at Disch-Falk Field in Austin, Texas. The right-hander gave up just one run on seven hits to pick up his fourth consecutive victory on the mound. He struck out a season-high nine Longhorn batters on 116 pitches, while walking a pair in his second complete game of the 2003 season.

The Player of the Week honor is the first for Averill in his career and the 39th selection all-time for UCLA. The Pitcher of the Week is the second such honor for Rierson this season, the 26th Wildcat to earn the weekly recognition.

Also nominated for Player of the Week were Steve Garrabrants, ASU; Chris Grossman, CAL; Seth Pietsch, OSU; John Mayberry, Jr., STAN. Also nominated for Pitcher of the Week were Beau Vaughan, ASU; Stephen Copeland, OSU; John Hudgins, STAN; Wes Whisler, UCLA; Trevor Gibson, WASH.
