Biles Ties Doubles Record

March 14, 2003

Chris Biles doubled three times to tie Oregon State's single game record, but the hits went for naught as the Beavers fell to Washington State 8-6 Friday afternoon in non-league baseball at Tri-City Stadium. OSU (9-10) and the Cougars (4-14) wrap up their series Saturday at 1 p.m.; the game can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240).

Biles matched a mark that had been accomplished five times, most recently by Garrett Bates in 1999 against Washington State. His double-filled day also moved him into OSU's all-time top-10 for two-base hits; his 34 career doubles put him in an eighth-place tie.

The loss ended the Beavers' nine-game winning streak in the series against WSU, a string going back to the middle of the 2001 season.

Oregon State outhit the Cougars 10-8, but the Beavers stranded 12 baserunners. OSU left the bases loaded in both the sixth and seventh innings with WSU leading 6-3; the Beavers put their first two baserunners aboard in both innings but didn't score in either frame.

Washington State moved out to a 4-0 lead against OSU starter Jared Sanders in the first three innings. The Cougars picked up a run without a hit in the second inning, then got a run-scoring double from Jay Miller and a two-run homer in the bottom of the third.

Reliever Kurt Steele got the Beavers out of that inning and OSU came back with a run on Kerisi Reynolds' double and Andy Jarvis' sacrifice fly in the fourth. In the bottom of the inning, though, the Cougars picked up two more runs without a hit, using three walks and an error to make it 6-1 with none out.

Steele then got the next three hitters, though, and set the Cougars down with just three hitters going to the plate in both the fifth and sixth innings. With OSU unable to cash in at the plate against WSU reliever Aaron MacKenzie, though, Washington State made it 8-3 with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Oregon State rallied for a pair of runs in the eighth, getting one on an error and pulling within 8-5 when Jarvis singled home a run with two out. OSU picked up another run in the ninth on Levi Webber's run-scoring groundout and brought the tying run to the plate, but couldn't knot the score.

Biles finished 3-for-5 while Reynolds was 2-for-3 with a double for OSU. Sanders took the pitching loss, falling to 0-1 this season.

Jarvis' run-scoring single gave him 145 career RBIs, moving him into sole possession of third on OSU's all-time list, and 188 career hits, giving him sole possession of fourth place on OSU's all-time list.
