Cats Take Second Game Thursday at Kia
March 14, 2003
FULLERTON, Calif. - Arizona pitchers finally gave up some runs to break a string of 12 shutouts, but the Cats prevailed anyway, beating Louisiana-Lafayette 7-3 in Thursday evening action at the Kia Klassic.
UA wasted little time getting on the board, using a two-run single by Mackenzie Vandergeest in the first, but Louisiana-Lafayette answered in the bottom of the frame to tie by tagging UA starter Wendy Allen with a two-run home run by Danyele Gomez after Jill Robertson was hit by a pitch.
The runs were the first given up by the UA since Virginia put one on the board in a 13-1 loss to UA on Feb. 22.
UA quickly re-gained the lead, posting three runs in the second on RBIs by Courtney Fossatti, Lovie Jung and Vandergeest to make it 5-2.
Lisha Ribellia led off the UA fourth with her fourth home run of the year to stretch it to 6-2 and the Cats added another run in the fifth on an RBI double by Jung. Louisiana-Lafayette picked up its final run in the sixth and had a runner on, but reliever Alicia Hollowell got a flyout and a strikeout to end the inning, then struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to ice the victory.
UA improved to 28-2 overall and dropped Louisiana-Lafayette to 14-4.
