Huskies Defeat Canadian U-19 National Team

February 27, 2003

EUGENE, Ore. - Melissa Bennett scored the game-winning goal in the 77th minute Thursday, lifting the Washington women's soccer team to a 1-0 exhibition victory over the Canadian under-19 National Team at Oregon's Pape Field.

The game was the first of seven spring contests for the Huskies, whose next action is scheduled for Saturday, April 5. UW plays a pair of games that day at the Nike Complex in Beaverton, Ore., meeting Washington State at 9 a.m. and Oregon at 4 p.m.

The Canadian junior nationals and Huskies battled to a scoreless tie before Bennett broke the deadlock in the 77th minute. She received a pass from Lindsy Humphrey and fired a 24-yard blast into Canada's goal.

The UW goalkeeping tandem of Lisa Brookens and Brittni Goodwin combined for the shutout. Each played one half.

Those two will battle this spring for the starting spot vacated by four-time All-Pac-10 selection Hope Solo who completed her career as UW's record holder in every goalkeeping category. Solo was the fourth overall draft choice in the recent WUSA Draft, selected by the Philadelphia Charge.
