March 14, 2003

FULLERTON, Calif. - The fifth-ranked Washington softball team (25-2-1) defeated Hawaii 5-2 Thursday to complete day one action of the Kia Klassic with a 2-0 mark. The Huskies will face off against host and ninth-ranked Cal State Fullerton Friday at 3 p.m. to determine the No. 1 seed for the single elimination bracket portion of the tournament.

The Huskies went up 1-0 in the first inning on a towering home run by Jaime Clark (Tustin, Calif.) that cleared the left field fence and traveled approximately 275 feet.

UW added to its lead in the second frame with a leadoff home run by Kathy Fiske (Temecula, Calif.). On a 3-1 count, Fiske hit a line drive that sailed just over the centerfield fence.

Washington broke the game open in the third inning with three runs on two hits to go up 5-0. Amanda Oleson (Agoura Hills, Calif.) led off the inning with a single into centerfield. After a Husky strikeout, Clark reached base on an error by the second baseman, which allowed her to sneak into second and Oleson to score. Clark stole third base and was driven home on a two-run blast by Kristen Rivera (Perris, Calif.) over the left-center fence.

Husky ace Ashley Boek (Redding, Calif.) dominated on the mound, throwing a no-hitter through five innings and striking out nine, including the side in the second and fifth innings.

Hawaii notched two runs in the sixth inning with a two-run single. Boek struck out the first batter of the frame but the next two batters reached base on consecutive fielding errors. The runners then advanced to second and third on a passed ball and April Crowell hit a line drive into left field two bring UH to within three at 5-2. Boek worked her way out of the inning with another strikeout and a line drive back to the mound. She closed the door on the Rainbow Wahine in the seventh inning with a strikeout and two infield ground balls.

Boek (12-1) earns the victory as she allowed just one hit and struck out a career-high 12 batters en route to her second shutout of the season.
