Baseball Blanks Washington State, 4-0

March 15, 2003

PASCO, Wash. - Stephen Copeland and Jon Koller combined to pitch a five-hitter as Oregon State blanked Washington State 4-0 in non-league baseball Saturday afternoon at Tri-City Stadium. The Beavers (10-10 overall) now take six days off for final exams before returning home to open a three-game series against California-Santa Barbara on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Against WSU (4-15), the Beavers also made at least four outstanding defensive plays in recording their third shutout of the season.

'Defensively, we played well,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'Stephen Copeland was outstanding, and Jon Koller was really good in the seventh and eighth innings, especially.'

Shortstop Tyler Graham, first baseman Andy Jarvis, leftfielder Seth Pietsch and rightfielder Kerisi Reynolds all made diving stops to rob the Cougars.

'Pitching and defense wins games,' Reynolds said. 'You always hear that, and today we proved we could do it. This sets the bar for us - there are no excuses now. We've got to get the job done.'

The Beavers had just five hits of their own, but capitalized on a pair of walks and a WSU error for three runs in the top of the second inning. OSU pushed the lead to 4-0 in the top of the fifth inning on one of the more unusual plays of the last several seasons.

Chris Kunda led off the inning with a triple to left-centerfield. Then Cougar lefthander Tony Banaszak's first pitch to Kerisi Reynolds skipped between the legs of WSU catcher Brandon Reddinger and Kunda broke from third.

'Then it hit the concrete,' Kunda said. The ball skipped straight back to Reddinger, who threw the ball to Banaszak covering the plate well ahead of Kunda's arrival.

'About the time the pitcher caught it, I went into my dive,' Kunda said. 'It was pretty thick (muddy) in there, and I just stopped.'

Kunda came up about two feet short of the plate, with Banaszak straddling the dish with the ball in his glove. Reynolds, at the plate at the time, had a good look at what ensued.

'He started to put one hand in there,' Reynolds said of Kunda. 'Then the pitcher reached to tag him, and he just put his left hand over it and touched the plate - I was in awe.'

'I just did everything I could to avoid the tag,' Kunda said. 'I thought they did a pretty good job of making the play. I don't know if the pitcher was off-balance or what, but he swiped at me and missed.'

Graham was the only Beaver with more than one hit, going 2-for-4. Copeland pitched three-hit ball over the first six innings, walking none and striking out two to even his record at 2-2. Koller earned his third save, pitching the final three innings and allowing two hits while walking none and striking out two.
