Cal Baseball Loses to UC Irvine, 9-3

BERKELEY, CA - Despite out-hitting UC Irvine, 11-9, the Cal baseball team lost to the Anteaters, 9-3, Saturday at Evans Diamond. The Bears fell to 12-9 overall, while the Anteaters improved to 9-13. The UC Irvine win tied the three-game series, 1-1. Cal won the first game, 8-7 in 12 innings, Friday.
The Bears struggled against the Anteaters, leaving 10 runners on base and Cal pitchers walked 10, including six straight batters in the eighth inning. The Bears scored a run in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI single by Brian Horwitz, but were then slowed down by UC Irvine starter Brett Smith. Smith improved his record to 4-1 by pitching 8.0 innings with 10 hits, three runs, two walks and five strikeouts.
The losing pitcher for Cal was junior starter Brian Montalbo (2-2, 4.3 innings, six hits, three earned runs, two walks, four strikeouts). Montalbo gave up single runs to the Anteaters in the second and third innings, and then gave up two runs in the fifth. UC Irvine tacked on another run in the sixth on a RBI double by Greg Wallis, and broke the game open with four runs in the eighth behind a lead-off home run by Kyle Ryckebosch and six walks.
Wallis and Mark Wagner (2-for-3, two doubles, two RBI) had two hits apiece for the Anteaters. Freshman Allen Craig paced the Bears, going 3-for-5 with a RBI single in the seventh inning. Horwitz, Jeremy Burchett, James Holder and Jeff Dragicevich each had a pair of hits for Cal. Burchett's hits extended his hitting streak to 11 games, and Holder had a RBI single in the eighth inning.
The Bears will next play the third game of the three-game series versus UC Irvine, Sunday, Mar. 16 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
