Cal Assistant, Wayne Ferreira, Wins Doubles Title at Pacific Life Open
March 17, 2003
Indian Wells, Calif. - Playing their first tournament together this season, Cal assistant coach Wayne Ferreira and his partner Yevgeny Kafelnikov rallied from a perilous position to defeat American twins Bob and Mike Bryan 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 in the Pacific Life Open doubles final March 16 in Indian Wells.
The Bryans served for the match at 5-4 in the second set but Ferreira/Kafelnikov claimed consecutive service breaks to take the set. The Bryans broke in the first game of the third set but again were unable to protect their lead.
Ferreira and Kafelnikov improved their impressive record in Tennis Masters Series finals to 5-1and repeated their 2001victory in Indian Wells. Kafelnikov has won 26 doubles titles, including seven at Masters Series level; Ferreira has 11 titles and six at Masters Series level. Ferreira and Kafelnikov defeated Australian Open champions Michael Llodra and Fabrice Santoro in the second round and second seeds Jonas Bjorkman and Todd Woodbridge in three sets in the semifinals.
The Bryans were seeking their second Masters Series title (Toronto, 2002) and a 10th career title. With nine titles they are one tournament victory away from equaling the record 10 titles won by brothers - Tim and Tom Gullikson.
Kafelnikov said: 'We won the crucial point in the last two sets. The boys were serving for it at 5-4 in the second set and we won the clutch points and then in third set, too. We didn't have a break point until 4-5 in the second set... I didn't feel like I could play again but after my surgery I feel healthy again that's why I'm here.'
Ferreira said: 'We weren't playing that bad but they were beating us. Once we came back in the second set it really inspired us. We got in a lot of returns and didn't miss too many balls. Their second serves seemed to slow down a bit. We played good tennis and hung in there.'
