CAL VS. BOISE STATE
The Golden Bears have competed against the Broncos three times during the indoor season. Cal visited Boise, Idaho for the Boise State Bandanna Indoor Invitational, Western Indoor Classic and Mountain Pacific Indoor Championships.
A LOOK AT THE OPPONENTS
The Broncos feature speedy WAC champion in the 200 (21.23) and 400 meters (46.89) in Ray Ardill. Kenny Johnson is another recent WAC indoor champion in the triple jump (51-8.5) and also holds the WAC outdoor title as well. On the women's side, Abbey Elberry won the WAC indoor weight championship (63-4.75), and last year's outdoor WAC javelin champion, Trina Rogers, boasts a lifetime best of 160-3. Other top performers include Taras Rohde (shot put, 56-1.75), Rob Minnitti (javelin, 241-0), Robin Wemple (SC, 10:32.85) and Linsey Dewey (400, 55.86-800, 2:09.46).
Azusa Pacifc features strong track and field teams on both the men's and women's side, evident by their recent sweep of the NAIA Indoor Track and Field titles. The teams marked the first time that both Cougar squads were crowned national champions and they are the fifth teams ever to capture both NAIA titles in the same meet. Azusa Pacific's top athlete is sophomore Vivian Chukwuemeka who boasts bests of 59-7.5 in the shot (sixth longest collegian all-time), 184-1 in the discus and 166-9 in the hammer. She was the 2002 British Commonwealth shot put champion. The men's NAIA championship win was its second-consecutive and the team won three of five running events at the meet. Senior Dominique DeGrammont, junior Nate Farris and sophomore Tim Ramierez will be names to watch for this Saturday.
