Cal Baseball Loses 6-2 at Saint Mary's

MORAGA, CA - Saint Mary's, led by the pitching of Gabe Palma and a 13-hit attack, defeated Cal 6-2 Tuesday at Louis Guisto Field in Moraga. The Bears, who have now lost five consecutive games at Saint Mary's home field, fall to 13-10 overall, while the Gaels improved to 10-12. Cal has not won at Louis Guisto Field since a 17-4 victory in 1997. The Bears had defeated the Gaels earlier this season, 6-2, Feb. 18 at Evans Diamond.
Palma earned his first win of the season in only his third career start. He threw 8.0 innings, scattering 10 hits with two runs, two walks and a strikeout. Gilbert Gil led Saint Mary's at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a RBI, while five other Gaels had single RBI. Andrew Bellows led off the eighth inning with a home run for Saint Mary's as well. The losing pitcher for the Bears was sophomore starter Joe Todoroff (3-1, 4.0 innings, six hits, three runs, two walks, five strikeouts).
Cal hit the ball hard throughout the game, registering 10 hits, but still leaving 11 runners on base. Top hitter for the Bears was junior shortstop Jeff Dragicevich, who went 3-for-4 with a double. Cal got its runs on a sacrifice fly by Conor Jackson in the third inning and a run scoring double play ball hit by Jackson in the ninth inning.
The Bears will next open Pac-10 play hosting Washington State in a three-game series, beginning Friday, Mar. 21 at 2 p.m. at Evans Diamond. The game times for the other two WSU-Cal contests are 1 p.m., Saturday, Mar. 22 and noon, Sunday, Mar. 23 (game time was changed from 1 p.m. to 12 p.m.).
