WSU Drops 9-5 Game At Portland
March 18, 2003
PORTLAND, Ore. -- - Washington State started the scoring but the host Portland Pilots had the final say while recording a 9-5 win over the Cougars Tuesday afternoon at Pilot Stadium.
Starter Karl Mejlholm (1-3) took the loss for WSU (5-16), allowing nine hits and seven runs in four innings. Bryce Chamberlin threw 3.1 innings and Aaron MacKenzie finished up for WSU, recording the final two outs of the game.
Jared Adams (1-0) picked up his first win of the season for Portland (4-15), allowing five runs and nine hits before giving way to Daniel Knox in the seventh inning. Adams notched his first save of the season.
Not to be outdone, Portland responded with a pair of runs in their half of the fourth, then added two more in the fifth and two in the eighth. WSU's only answer was a single tally in the seventh when Bruce singled home Jeremy Farrar.
The two teams combined for 23 hits, 13 by the Pilots, but only one was for extra bases, Gustaf Little's fourth inning double.
The Cougars, who have won two of three games from Portland this season, now head to California, where they open Pacific-10 play Friday against the California Bears in a three-game series.
