March 19, 2003
Stanford, Calif. -
Sophomore Matt Gentry (Grants Pass, OR/North Valley) will begin competition tomorrow at the 2003 NCAA Championships in Kansas City, Missouri. Gentry has a 28-8 record heading into the post-season and a 12-0 dual record.
Gentry will face Chris Bitetto of Northern Iowa in his first bout on Thursday. The winner will face the No. 2 seed at 157 pounds, Keaton Anderson of Ohio State. Defending National Champion, Minnesota's Luke Becker secured the No. 1 seed for the weight class.
The 2003 NCAA Championships are Gentry's second appearance in the post-season. In 2002, Gentry placed second at the Pac-10 Championships at 149 pounds for his first NCAA berth. As a freshman, he posted a 1-2 record at the NCAA Championships.
This season, Gentry finished in sixth place at the conference tournament, but was awarded an alternate spot and received his NCAA bid last week. Gentry has faced eight of the other NCAA Qualifiers at 157 pounds this season and has compiled a 6-6 record against the field (two of the losses came during the Pac-10 Tournament). At Midlands in December, Gentry tallied a 13-4 major decision over Iowa's Joe Johnston, the NCAA Championships's No. 8 seed.
Competition will begin Thursday, March 20th at 9 a.m. Pacific Time. NCAASports.com will be posting updated brackets, while IntermatWrestle.com will be providing free live audio coverage throughout the tournament as well as interviews and features.
