Women of Troy Take Over No. 1 Ranking

March 19, 2003

PRINCETON, N.J. - The 2003 USC women's tennis team took over the No. 1 ranking in the Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings released today by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), marking the first time the Women of Troy have earned the top position in 17 years.

After capturing the 1985 NCAA Championship, USC entered the 1986 season ranked No. 1, but eventually lost the position to Stanford during the season. Until this season, the Women of Troy had not been ranked higher than No. 3.

Under eighth-year head coach Richard Gallien, the 2003 Trojans are 13-1 overall this season and 2-0 in the Pac-10. Their only loss was to then-ranked No. 2 Florida on Feb. 8 in the USTA/ITA Indoor Championship semifinals. Florida held the No. 1 spot last week, but suffered a 4-3 loss to Vanderbilt on March 16 and fell to No. 5.

Five of the top 10 teams this week are from the Pacific-10 Conference, including the top three - USC, Stanford and California.
