Veronica Nelson Sets Cal Career RBI Record (156)

March 20, 2003

Vicky Galindo, Eryn Manahan and Veronica Nelson each launched home runs Thursday evening to lead the sixth-ranked California softball team (24-6) past Long Island University, 9-0, in day one of the Sacramento Capital Classic. For senior first baseman Nelson, the three run blast tallied a new Cal career RBI record (156), surpassing the former 153 career RBIs set by Melanie McCart (1994-97).

Third baseman Galindo led off the game with an inside the park home run that she stung down the right field line, giving Cal an early 1-0 lead and her first dinger of the season.

In the second, Manahan cranked the ball beyond the left-center fence, her first home run of the season, scoring Chelsea Spencer and Jessica Pamanian, both who reached on singles for a 3-0 score after two innings.

Cal crossed the plate again in the sixth off a RBI double by Galindo and a fielder's choice by catcher Courtney Scott. With two outs and runners on the corners, Nelson sailed a pitch 290 feet from home plate, her seventh of the season, to put the score at 9-0.

Nelson has hit a home run of each of the past five tournaments. She already holds the Cal career records for home runs (49), walks (335) and slugging percentage (.658). To date, her additional career stats include a .338 BA, 174 hits, 18 doubles, 84 runs and .598 on base percentage.

After tossing two frames, sophomore Kelly Anderson (1 hit, 1 BB, 3 K) was relieved by sophomore Cassie Bobrow. Bobrow collected her first decision of the season, improving her record to 1-0 after shutting out the Blackbirds for three innings, allowing three hits, one walk and whiffing three batters. Freshman Kristina Thorson entered the circle in the top of the sixth, giving up a base hit to the lead off batter before striking out the next three batters to end the game due to the eight-run-rule.

Jackie Brown suffered the loss for LIU, falling to 0-8 for the season as the Blackbirds stand at 4-12 for the year.

Cal received a multi-hit game from Pamanian (3-for-3), Galindo (2-for-3) and Nelson (2-for-3).

Looking to continue its 12-game winning streak, the Bears return to action Friday at 10 a.m. squaring off against Eastern Kentucky followed by a 12:30 p.m. match up against Utah State for day two of the 11-team Classic hosted by Sacramento State.
