Webster Into Quarterfinals at NCAA Championships
March 20, 2003
KANSAS CITY - Shane Webster, ranked No. 12 in the nation at 174, made it to the final eight in the championship bracket at the NCAA Championships in Kansas City. Webster defeated No. 5 Tyler Nixt of Iowa, 7-4, in the second round and will wrestle in the quarterfinals Friday morning.
'Shane won a big match tonight, probably the biggest match of his life,' head coach Chuck Kearney said. 'It was one of those hard-fought matches where points were stingy, and then the dam just broke for Shane.'
Webster, a sophomore from Sams Valley, Ore., used two takedowns in the third period to put the match out of reach. In the championship quarterfinals, Webster will match up with Purdue's Ryan Lange, the No. 4 seed at the tournament. The two wrestlers met early in the season in the finals at the Mat-Town USA Invitational, with Webster winning, 9-7.
'Each round gets more and more intense,' Kearney said. 'Shane's going to need to stay focused and match that intensity.'
Webster won his first match of the day, 3-2, against Cornell's Tyler Baier. It was the first time the two had wrestled each other.
Senior Casey Hunt's career came to an end with his second loss of the day. Hunt trailed early in the match against Josh Wooton of Northern Illinois and was unable to make up the ground, losing 19-3.
'Casey had a great season,' Kearney said. 'He just got behind quick and had to open things up to try and catch up, but Wooton's a great wrestler and took advantage.'
Hunt's first loss of the day came to the No. 6 seed at the tournament, Lock Haven's Mike Maney, 2-1. Maney won the match because he had a riding time advantage of 1:04. When a wrestler has a riding time advantage of more than one minute, that wrestler earns a point in the match.
Junior Jason Harless finished his season with a loss to the No. 4 seed, Oklahoma's Witt Durden, 6-2. Harless lost his opening round match to Clarion's Rad Martinez, 9-0. Harless fought through nagging injuries to finish out the season.
Friday's first session will begin at 10 a.m. Results will be updated live at www.ncaasports.com/wrestling/mens.
