Strong Field Highlights Annual UCLA/Pioneer Classic
March 21, 2003
The 13th ranked UCLA women's golf team hosts the annual UCLA/Pioneer Classic, Mar. 24-26, at Robinson Ranch Golf Club in Santa Clarita.
The Robinson Ranch Valley Course will play to a par of 72 over 6,254 yards. It will be the first time the event will be played at this site.
'We have assembled an outstanding field,' said UCLA Head Coach Carrie Leary. 'Several of the top teams are local and that is an added attraction.'
The host Bruins have finished among the Top 10 in every tournament on their schedule this season. Twice they have finished second to Pepperdine, ranked No.1 earlier this week. Sophomore Charlotte Mayorkas is UCLA's highest ranked player at No.13.
The Bruins placed second to the Waves at their last tournament, the Spartan Invitational. UCLA posted a 54-hole score of 882, its best of the season. Mayorkas tied for fourth place at one-over par 217.
Top-ranked and two-time defending Pioneer Classic champion Pepperdine heads a field of 18 teams, seven of which are ranked among the nation's Top 25. The Waves have won three straight tournaments entering next week's event and boast the nation's second and third ranked players in seniors Katherine Hull and Lindsey Wright.
Other Top 25 teams in the field include No.5 USC, No.8 California, No.11 Washington, No.12 New Mexico and No.23 New Mexico State. Also participating will be Washington State, winner of three straight events, UC Irvine, Texas Tech, Stanford, San Jose State, San Francisco, Portland State, Oregon State, Oregon, Long Beach State, Cal State Northridge, which has won two tournaments and BYU. California is a four-time winner this season, UC Irvine won its own Anteater Invitational last week, and USC recently won the Thompson Invitational in Hawaii.
Other Top 10 rated individuals include fourth-ranked Mikaela Parmlid of USC and eighth-ranked Alena Sharp of New Mexico State, who recently won the Lady Gamecock individual title.
