Trojans Open Pac-10 Defense With 12-2 Win At Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. - Freshman catcher Jeff Clement went 3-for-5 with two home runs and five RBI Friday and the USC Trojans, two-time defending Pac-10 Conference champions, opened conference play with a 12-2 win over the host Arizona Wildcats. Clement now leads the Pac-10 Conference with 13 home runs on the season as he hit both home runs in the same inning. It was the fourth time this season he has two homers in a game.
USC received help from two other freshmen, pitchers Bobby Paschal and Michael Cooper. Paschal improved to 2-3 on the season with six innings of work, allowing two runs on two hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Paschal did not allow a hit until the fifth inning. Cooper earned his first collegiate save with three scoreless innings, allowing only one hit.
The Trojans improved to 13-11 overall (1-0 in Pac-10 play) while the Wildcats fell to 19-8 overall (0-1 in the Pac-10).
Clement hit a two-run double down the right field line in the first, scoring center fielder Travis McAndrews and shortstop Anthony Lunetta. Leading off the third, Clement hit the first pitch from Rierson with a solo homer to right. He closed out the Trojans' eight-run inning with a two-run shot to center. USC registered nine hits in the third, including a two-run triple by McAndrews and two-run homer to left by second baseman Jon Brewster, his third of the season.
Rierson suffered his first loss of the season (4-1) by allowing seven runs on eight hits in 2 2/3 innings.
Arizona's Brian Anderson set a school record by extending his hitting streak to 26 games with an RBI triple in the sixth.
Both teams will continue the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. with the finale on Sunday (March 23), also at 1 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
