No. 17 Bears (12-5, 2-4) Lose to San Jose State in Season Finale

San Jose, Calif. - The California women's gymnastics team (12-4, 2-4, Pac-10) closed the cover on its storybook season tonight by suffering its lowest score of the year in a tough defeat at the hands of the San Jose State Spartans at Spartan Gym in San Jose. The Spartans edged the Bears ever so slightly, winning 192.925 - 192.525, handing Cal its fifth loss of the season and first non-conference defeat.
Junior Karissa Chock was the top Bear finisher, taking second place honors in the all-around competition while finishing in a four-way second place tie with teammates Janet McKnight and Lauren Shipp on the vault. The 9.850 second-place mark tied both Chock and Shipp's career bests. The vault event was mastered by Cal sophomore My-Lan Dodd, who not only took the gold, but tied her previous Cal record score of 9.950 for the second time this year. Dodd capped of her evening performance by placing second on bars and tied for first on the floor.
Also in the floor competition, freshman Britani Pittullo finished in a two-way tie for third place.
On the beam, both squads took numerous falls, but sophomore Lauren Shipp claimed first place honors with a 9.750.
Cal returns to action Saturday, March 28, as it travels to Los Angeles to take part in the Pac-10 Championships at Pauley Pavilion at UCLA. Competition time is set for 6:00 p.m.
