Arizona Creates Another Tough Sunday For Trojans

TUCSON, Ariz. - Brad Boyer went 4-for-5 with three RBI while Nick Hundley went 4-for-4 with two RBI Sunday and the Arizona Wildcats defeated the USC Trojans, 16-3, in Pac-10 Conference action at Frank Sancet Field. It was the first time that Arizona has won a series against USC since 1993.
Richie Gardner improved to 6-0 on the season for the Wildcats, going eight innings and allowing only two runs on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Josh Rummonds (2-1) took the loss after allowing three runs in four innings.
Arizona improves to 21-8 overall on the season and 2-1 in Pac-10 play while USC falls to 13-13 overall, 1-2 in the Pac-10. The Trojans have been outscored, 62-11, in the last four Sunday games.
The Wildcats scored a run in the third when Boyer tripled down the right field line, scoring shortstop John Hardy.
In the fourth, David Gordon hit a two-out, two-run homer to left to give the Trojans a 2-1 lead. It was Gordon's sixth homer of the season. The Wildcats tied the game in the bottom of the inning on an infield single by first baseman Jordan Brown.
Arizona took the lead in the fifth on Boyer's RBI single. With runners at first and second with no outs, reliever Michael Cooper retired Moises Duran and got Trevor Crowe to ground out into an inning-ending double play. The Wildcats broke the game open with a seven-run sixth inning, thanks to home runs by Brian Anderson, Brown and Duran.
USC will host Fresno State in a non-conference game on Tuesday (March 25) at 6 p.m. at Dedeaux Field before taking on Arizona State in Pac-10 action, beginning on Friday (March 28) at 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday's games will start at 1 p.m. All four games will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker play-by-play, on usctrojans.com.
