Bruins Rally for 11-10 Win Over Wichita State
March 23, 2003
UCLA (14-14) scored one run in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 10-10 to defeat Wichita State (14-8) for the second straight day at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Bruins put seven runs on the board in the first inning. Singles from Brett McMillan and Chris Denove, two walks, two hit batters and a sacrifice fly from Matt Thayer drove in the first two runs. With the bases loaded, Sean Carpenter would bring all of the runners across home plate when he went to second on an error. Singles from Preston Griffin and another from McMillan would bring two more runs in.
The lead would be short lived though, as the Shockers posted six runs in the top of the third inning. A lead-off home run from Logan Sorensen would start the rally before four singles and a double drove in five more.
Wichita State evened the score in the top of the fourth when Sorensen drove in Brandon Green, who had reached on a walk.
UCLA jumped back into the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. A one-out double from Kevin Conlin gave the Bruins a runner in scoring position. McMillan would record his second RBI of the contest when his third single of the game brought Conlin in to score.
The Shockers rallied again to claim their first lead of the game in the top of the seventh inning. A double from Cory Clark scored Sorensen who had reached base on a single. A pinch-hit single from Nick Blasi would score Clark to give Wichita State a 9-8 lead after seven and a half innings.
UCLA recorded two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead. Carepnter's one-out double started the Bruin rally. Griffin followed him with a walk and both runners advanced on a balk. With the runners at second and third, a drag bunt from Billy Susdorf scored Carpenter. Griffin would then score on a single from Wes Whisler.
Another tie would follow as Wichita State scored another run in the eighth inning on a solo home run from Brandon Green.
The Bruins were not defeated, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the inning. Thayer walked to leadoff the inning. After moving to second on a ground-out by Brandon Averill, Thayer advanced to third on a single from Conlin. Carpenter would drive in his fourth run of the game, scoring Thayer on a sacrifice fly to right field.
Carpenter's four RBI marked a new career-high for the freshman, while McMillan led UCLA with three hits on the day.
The Bruins will return to action on Tuesday night when they travel to #7 Long Beach State. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
