No. 12 Cardinal Take Two From Illinois-Chicago

March 23, 2003

Stanford, Calif. - Freshman Catalina Morris (Sonoita, AZ) powered the Cardinal offense, going a combined 4-for-8 with a triple, home run and three RBI as the 12th-ranked Stanford softball team swept visiting Illinois-Chicago 5-0 and 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal stand at 24-8, while the Flames fall to 7-21.

Stanford wasted no time and jumped on the board 2-0 in the second inning. Elizabeth Bendig (Santa Ana, CA) started the rally with a one-out single up the middle. Katherine Hoffman (Kansas City, MO) kept the momentum going with a base hit and Morris unleashed a two-out triple to left center, scoring both Bendig and Hoffman for the game's first runs.

The Cardinal added one run in the third and fourth to extend their lead 4-0. With two outs, Cassi Brangham (Clovis, CA) drew a walk and advanced to second on Maureen LeCocq's (Woodland Hills, CA) base hit to left. Bending delivered a single to score Brangham, but was thrown out at second to end the third inning. Pinch runner Heather Shook (Whittier, CA) scored on Morris' hit when the third baseman's throw sailed wide for Stanford's fourth run of the game.

Pitcher Brittany McInyre recorded the Flames first hit off Stanford starter Dana Sorensen (San Diego, CA) in the fifth. Leah Nelson (Oakland, CA) accounted for the Cardinal's final run of the game, singling in Brangham for the 5-0 advantage.

Illinois-Chicago put two runners on in the seventh, but LeCocq, pitching for Sorensen, fanned Nicole Shepard and got the next two batters to ground out giving Stanford the win.

Morris finished with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with a triple and two RBI, while Bendig was 2-for-2. Sorensen got the win to move to 10-2, going five innings and striking out seven.

In the second game, Kira Ching (San Lorenzo, CA) gave Stanford an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when she smacked her fourth home run of the year, a solo shot to center field. Morris followed Ching's act with a solo homer of her own in the third.

The Cardinal opened up with three runs in the fourth, highlighted by Michelle Thiry's (Renton, WA) two-out double scoring Brangham and Bendig. Lauren Lappin (Anaheim, CA) led off the sixth with a single and scored two outs later on Brangham's base hit for Stanford's final run of the game.

Illinois-Chicago scored its first run against the Cardinal when Shepard knocked a single off reliever Laura Severson (Frankfort, IL) that plated pinch runner Trista Korbas. Severson then retired the next four batters to preserve the win.

Tori Nyberg (Belmont, CA) picked up her 11th win of the year, pitching five innings and striking out five. Lappin and Jessica Allister (Nacogdoches, TX) each went 2-for-3 to head the Stanford offense.

The Cardinal will be back in action on Wednesday, March 26, when they travel to Fresno to take on the Bulldogs. The doubleheader is set to begin at 6 p.m.
