Beavers Take Baseball Series Finale

March 24, 2003

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Seth Pietsch and Andy Jarvis drove in runs in the seventh inning to push Oregon State to a 6-4 win over California-Santa Barbara on Monday afternoon in non-league baseball at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Pietsch tripled home the go-ahead run, then scored on Jarvis' single as the Beavers (12-11 overall) took the series from the Gauchos (13-13); the teams had split a doubleheader on Sunday.

OSU now opens Pacific-10 play with a weekend series against California. The teams play Friday at 5 p.m., Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.; all three games can be heard on KEJO-AM (1340).

Monday's win completed a hectic series for OSU and UCSB. After being rained out on Saturday, the teams played all three games in just over a day - 24 hours and 34 minutes, to be exact, from the first pitch of Sunday's doubleheader to the final out of Monday's game. And that doesn't take into account all the time the teams spent at the ballpark on Sunday waiting to play, as the start of the first game was delayed just over two hours by rain.

But the Beavers left the diamond upbeat, having rallied to win the last two games, take the series and get back over .500 for the season.

'I think it will help us get that winning feeling back,' said OSU senior first baseman Andy Jarvis, whose two hits drove in three Beaver runs Monday. 'We just got in a rut there for a while and dropped a couple of games to teams we didn't feel we should have lost to.'The Beavers have now won three of their last four games.

'They're a good club,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said of the Gauchos. 'Hopefully, we'll gain some confidence and this will give us some momentum going into conference.'

Jarvis had a key hit in the Beavers' three-run fifth inning. With two out, Jarvis punched a no-ball, two-strike pitch into short centerfield for a two-run single that made it 4-0. Chris Kunda had started the inning with his first career home run, as the freshman second baseman drove a full-count pitch over the fence in straightaway leftfield.

UCSB tied it with a four-run sixth inning, though, ending OSU senior righthander Stephen Copeland's scoreless innings streak at 16. Copeland, who had not allowed an earned run over 12 innings in his last two starts, allowed just three hits through five scoreless innings on Monday before running into trouble with two out and runners at first and third base in the sixth.

Taylor Vogt and Bill Rowe had back-to-back run-scoring singles. Junior reliever Jared Sanders then gave up another run-scoring single to Chad Ziemendorf, then junior Jake Postlewait walked Nic Rodriguez to load the bases. Kurt Steele came on and hit Brian Adams to force in the tying run before getting a groundout to end the inning.

After Steele retired the Gauchos in the top of the seventh, freshman centerfielder Jacoby Ellsbury led off the bottom of the inning with a double down the rightfield line and Pietsch followed with a triple that he tucked just inside the foul line and into the rightfield corner to score Ellsbury for a 5-4 lead. Jarvis then bounced a single through the right side of a drawn-in infield for the 6-4 margin.

Then it was up to freshman righthander Andy Baldwin, who had pitched in both games Sunday and earned the win in the second game. After a hit batter and a walk, he got a bouncer back to the mound to start an inning-ending double play in the eighth; he then retired the top of the Gaucho order one-two-three in the ninth for the win.

'If I could pitch every day, I would,' said Baldwin, who earned his first career save. 'Plus, one of those games was just one pitch (in the first game of the doubleheader). I was lucky; I came in in some good situations. It's what closers have to do, and I've got to work a little on the mindset of that.'

Steele earned the win, improving to 2-0 this season.

Pietsch was 2-for-4 with a triple and a double. The triple was the 10th of his career, tying him for second on OSU's list of all-time leaders.
